Autism is a developmental disorder of brain dysfunction with patients exhibiting a characteristic set of behaviors including impaired reciprocal social interaction, impaired verbal and nonverbal communication, a marked restriction of activities and interests, and abnormal response to sensory stimuli. A global incidence of 4.5:10,000 children is reported, with a 4:1 ratio of males to females affected by autistic syndromes.
